African Design Centers

African cities are experiencing unprecedented rates of growth — adding an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 people every day — and are in dire need of primary infrastructure capacity. The continent’s urban population will rise from 400 million today to 1.2 billion by 2050.
The African Design Centers are a breakthrough idea to support architects and designers in Africa to come up with solutions that harness the large opportunities the continent has to offer and plan systems that will revolutionize the continent development. ADC is a system of apprenticeship-based institutes that will develop emerging African design leaders through project-based learning, traditional instruction across design fields (e.g., architecture, interaction design, and product design), and leadership development. Teaching will be done by internationally-acclaimed design educators and supported by design professionals who will serve as fellows. By 2018, we will have three centers training approximately 600 designers per year and seeding the movement of design that is so critical to the future of Africa. Training the generation of African designers that can lead the continent through an unprecedented renaissance of development, prosperity, beauty, and dignity.
